Spiritus Mortis

The God behind the God
Firebox Records

Genre: Doom Metal

From the ancient dark forest of Finland dooms the dark sound of Spiritus Mortis. The oldest doom metal band from Finland, founded in 1987. They started as a trio until in 1999 vocalist Vesa Lampi joined the band. But it took 17 years until their first complete debutalbum Spiritus Mortis saw the light.

Followed in 2006 by their second cd. Now it’s time for their third and most recent album The god behind the god. Their third album with their third recordlabel with their third vocalist Sami Hynninen. 333, the number of the …. The cd opens with an uptempo song The man of steel.

The tempo of the songs increases hard after that. The second song The death bride is a hymn, in which the love for the deceased bride is sung with a great honour. Music and lyrics are totally complementary and made this song complete. The dramatic side of life and dead is getting shaped in the four next songs.

Heavy grooves from Jussi Maijala and Kari Lavila on guitar are driving life slowly to the obscure abyss, supported by Teemu Maijla on bass and Jarkko Seppala on drums. And the lyrics of Sami preach damnation. After 6 songs I’m leaning back and listen to the titlesong that lasts almost 12 minutes.

The message in this song isn’t reach me anymore. It continues terribly slowly and I notice that my interest disappeared. Twelve minutes are too long for me. Gladly Spiritus Mortis ends the cd with a more uptempo song. Finally the feeling exists that I have may listened to a good doom metal cd.

This summer the guys of Spiritus Mortis will play some gigs in Finland. After that they will come over in october to spread out their dark blanket of sound all over Europe.
