Published: 03 March 2010De first album by ¡Pendejo!, Cantos a la Vida, was released in Spain and Portugal in February and will also be released in the Benelux on march 5. When I got my hands on this CD I was surprised by a couple of things. First of all I had not heard of ¡Pendejo! but since Spanish is my native language I got interested when I saw the name of the band.
I was even more surprised when I learned that ¡Pendejo! is a Dutch band that writes their songs completely in Spanish. And then there’s the fact that the band consists of members from Dreadlock Pussy, A Dutch Nu-Metal band I’ve been listening to for a long time. Of course I was very curious what I was going to hear when I put the disc into my CD-player.
The first track on Cantos a la Vida is the song Flotadores. It was not at all what I expected to hear, but in a good way. ¡Pendejo! Sounds more mature. I was expecting to hear more of a Dreadlock Pussy type of sound, but while Dreadlock Pussy was a Nu-Metal band, ¡Pendejo! Sounds more like stoner-rock with Latin influences. There are 12 tracks on Cantos a la Vida which all sound very good with great guitar-riffs and lyrics like in Flotadores: “You’re drowning and screaming for help while swallowing the shit, and I’m sitting here peacefully while watching your face.”
Flotadores is also one of the most impressive songs on the album alongside Tan,Tan,Tan, La Vagancia (No Me Cuesta) another song with great lyrics about sloth. The tracks get slower near the end of the CD, but the faster song Communicado makes up for that.
¡Pendejo!’s first album Cantos a la Vida is a great album. Every song is put together nicely and filled with cool guitar-riffs, and powerful vocals and drums. All of the songs sound wicked and the lyrics are well-written. I was even surprised how well they use Latin American street language! Cantos a la Vida is an awesome album from beginning until the end of the CD. I would definitely recommend this album.
