Published: 03 December 2008Legion? Wasn’t he that singer that sounded like a crow with flue-like symptoms near the end of his period with Marduk? Yes, that was him, but clearly rest and power boosted his devilish voice back to its original state.
That was already proven by this Swedish vocalist on The Nine Winged Serpent; the debut album from Devian. Next to that the band proved to be musically more interesting than that other musical panzer division.
It becomes clear that the music remains that powerful on this second release. The band still plays pounding death metal with some black metal influences. Contrary to what he did with Marduk, Devian adds all kinds of atmospherical and melodic elements to the music, resulting in a colourful mixture. It’s all there, from furious thrashy riffing to angry blastbeats and epic guitar solos.
Luckily, Legion sounds as deadly as they ever were. The record is blessed with a terrific production and once again the band prove that they can release great material. Fans of firm black death metal that are not against a bit of melody within the music won’t be disappointed.
