Vinnie Moore - Master and genius and without UFO

Moore enjoys some more recognition these last few years because he replaced the always moody Michael Schenker. Even more his input and compositional talent takes Mogg and his bunch up to a standard they never reached when Schenker was in the band. However this versatile guitar player toured with Alice Cooper and played lead guitar on the Vicious Rumors debut album back in 1985. The discovery by Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records resulted in his first solo work Mind’s Eye where Tony MacAlpine, yes the MacAlpine, played keyboards. The guitarist with short curly hair plays mostly instrumental music and the most cosy club in Belgium is pointed out as a stop on the European tour to promote the latest album To The Core.

Vinnie and his band come on stage at about a quarter to nine and starts of with the song With The Flow from his third solo effort Out Of Nowhere. This is it and the tone is set. The band is determined to have a splendid time and what a band it is. Mike DiMeo earned his credibility with the likes of Riot, Masterplan and The Lizards. Aquiles Priester took the drumseat with Hangar and Lars Lehmann pounded the bass on tour with that German guitar genius called Uli Jon Roth. Daydream from the debut album Mind’s Eye follows immediately and there isn’t a second wasted with unnecessary chit chat.

The Maze from the album by the same name takes every doubt away. Vinnie Moore can match the greats of this earth like Vai or Satriani. With Maybe I’m A Leo the band is presenting a Deep Purple cover to about hundred people in the audience. Mike DiMeo takes the lead vocals and does it well. What you can see is that he is not behind the microphone all the time. After that and in high gear we get Rain, Ridin’ High with a bit of Free’s A ll Right Now and more of that beautiful stuff.

The audience only enjoys Over My Head and Off The Hook from the latest To The Core but that is obviously not enough. The encores again show talent of all musicians in the band. Everyone gets their fifteen seconds of fame and they close the set with the amazing Hendrix cover Fire. Everybody happy, even Dutch Sun Caged guitarist Marcel Coenen leaves the club clapping his hands. Don’t worry. Vinnie Moore is about to hit the stage called Boerderij in Zoetermeer Holland in the near future.
