S A M A E L - Somehow it’s always a party

On a beautiful Thursday night I decided to visit a concert again. This time I would go to S A M A E L, the first band I for who I wrote a review and who I could interview. This time I could interview the band again, but this time face-to-face. I knew what to expect on this night of S A M A E L, but of the support act, Deadcell, I knew absolutely nothing. However, it would always be a party.

It was quiet in Bibelot, probably because there were a lot of people on festivals. The whole evening wouldn’t get busier, what might not give a good feeling to the bands that have to play, but the show must go on. Deadcell had the privilege to start and with a mixture of rock and electronic dance the band opened pretty strong. They had a tight beat as accompaniment, with here and there some dance elements for the melody and a tight riff work of the female guitarist. The band exists out of four members and one of them only dances, so if she is a full member of the band, is still a question to me. This young lady dances pretty well and it gives the show a certain touch to it, but it is not really special. The singer, who also played some guitar, started off with a wrong Roman helmet, which luckily was put to the sight pretty quick.

The guitarist and the DJ didn’t stand out much, but they did their job well. The band used some movies on the background, but they weren’t in a good sight, because of the keyboards and percussion elaboration of S A M A E L. That was a pity. It is also a pity, that Deadcell was getting boring pretty quick, mainly due to the one tone beat and the really not that interesting vocals. A fine band for half an hour, but I wouldn’t give them more than that. Then I expect more variation! I also miss the live drummer in this band. With a live band there should be a live drummer in my opinion, it gives a certain extra feel to it.

Then it was time for S A M A E L. The band started off really strong and he is known by his wide spread repertoire from black metal to metal with electronic elements to it. S A M A E L doesn’t have a live drummer, but Xy uses percussion to keep the whole interesting. The beat on the drum computer is also not just the same, but also contains a lot of variation. That is pleasant to listen to. Vorph, the singer, also played guitar and everything was played very tight. Mak (guitar) and Mas (bass) gave the band an extra boost with their playing and mainly Mas took the attention. It is a small man, but he certainly shows he has a lot of fun. Jumping up and down and keep smiling, I really get the feeling I wanted to play along.

The voice of Vorph was clear, although he felt away one in a while. I must admit I am not font of all the work of S A M A E L, but what they played that night, was very pleasant to me. Some of the songs they played were Rain, Solar Soul, Into The Pentagram and Slavocracy. Slavocracy was of course the best ending before the short break, where after they played some more songs to finally stop for the evening. It was a wonderful musical evening that was filled in by S A M A E L and Deadcell.
