De Heideroosjes Manie Manie - cabaret

Cheap, but funny humour

After 19 years of punkrock The Heideroosjes are in for something new, and therefore they took the road that leads to cabaret. Which wasn’t such a bad idea, because if you take a closer look at some of their lyrics you’ll find there’s a lot of humour in it. With the help op Martin van Waardenberg, Minou Bosua and Erik Vlasblom [famous Dutch cabaret artists – ed.] they have put a show together that will be played 75 times.

But what can you expect from a punkrock cabaret? You can’t name it cabaret on a high level. It consists of mostly rude jokes, but also with some serious moments. As a friend of me would say: cheap humor. But cheap can be good and funny, and that’s what it is!

Brief sketches without a real theme, but wired to each other by frontman Marco Roeloefs. In this show everybody plays his part, but the main role is for the drummer Igor Hobus! Sketches where Sinterklaas [traditional Dutch folklore for children, celebrated on 5 December – Sinterklaas looks like Santa Claus – ed.] is trying to play the guitar, but he can’t.

It starts being really funny when Santa Claus disturbs him with much larger amplifiers and a more cooler guitar and dares him for a battle. But it is the Easter bunny who wins al the attention with his huge DJ table.

Highlight of this show is the puppet theatre. Brilliant! But what exactly happens there I can’t tell, ’cause it looks silly on paper.
You just have to watch it!

Both the musical as the cabaret parts were surprisingly good. Especially the acoustic versions of Homesick For A Place That Does Not Exist, Ik Ben Niet Bang and A Bag Full Of Stories. The only bad thing was that we had to sit a chair, and we couldn’t go crazy on the punkrock songs. No worries however, they will come back next year and are planning to give some huge parties to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
