Orange Sky – They seriously rock!

Port of Spain, Trinidad may not be the first city music fans think of when the discussion of ‘hot rockspots’ comes up. But if the sophomore effort from Orange Sky, ‘Dat Iz Voodoo,’ is a representation of the local talent, it may soon join the likes of New York, Seattle, and London, as the group (which is comprised of singer/lead guitarist Nigel Rojas, rhythm guitarist Joel Beazer, bassist Nicholas Rojas, keyboardist Richard Hall, and drummer Obasi Springer) will be opening up a string of dates in the US with metal legends King’s X.

FURY had the chance to talk with lead guitarist/vocalist, Nigel Rojas.

The style that Orange Sky specialize in is quite varied…yet rocking can you tell us more?

Nigel: ‘Once a fan gave us the highest compliment, “You guys sound and perform like if the Wailers and Black Sabbath had a baby”. I call our sound ‘rock and roll. We emulate everything - hard rock, soft rock, punk, reggae, and metal, so I think the term rock and roll covers all these styles, and does not create an expectation from the potential listener of us being too metal, too reggae, too hard, or too soft. Our overall style offers all these soundscapes, colors, and emotions.’

Can you tell us a little about your new CD - Dat Iz Voodoo?

‘ It was released via StarCity Records, it represents a rebirth for Orange Sky, and proves that our debut CD from 2006’s ‘Upstairs,’ was no fluke. We seriously rock on this CD! It’s packed with music that existing fans and new listeners alike will go wild for. Dat Iz Voodoo has stuff that’s really meant to be played live. Not just songs to listen to, but songs to bang your head to. It’s a more progressive record. We were a little more open to each other, playing songs we knew would go off better live.’

Do you have a favorite song on the CD?

‘I would say ‘Alone,’ because it is a blast from the past - we all like to think of it as a song we could share on the radio.” A dozen songs in all, guaranteed to get fists pumping and moshpits swirling - with a couple of lighters-in-the-air/arm-around-your-girl moments in between.’

What’s it like to be tour with Kings X?

‘We are honored to be able to share the stage with them. We have always loved King's X since the early '90s and were fortunate to open form them last year in the US. They put on an incredible live show.’
