Nemhain – English humor & Rock ‘N’ Roll

What made you decide to call your band after a Irish mythology God?

Amber: I spent quite a few years under the name Morrigan while i was doing a lot of modelling and performing work. We formed the band in 2006 and I decided that I really wanted to concentrate on music. Nemhain is an aspect of The Morrigan and it kind of signifies a new phase… kind of a different incarnation if that makes any sense.

How do you think the reactions on the new album will be?

I hope people will get into it, it's honest music and comes straight from the soul. We all put everything into it and I think this will come through. I realize that my having done modeling work might put some people off because it's a bit of a cliché but at the end of the day it's about the music not our day jobs.

This is your first album, although your EP Blood Runs Free contains some songs that are also on the album Out Of The Ashes, is their any difference between the EP and the Album?

Amber: Yes, the EP was recorded on virtually no budget at all and the songs have moved on a fair amount since then. We've added bits and pieces here and there and actually cut a few bits out too. There are also additional vocal harmonies on the album.

Amber, I understood that you have never been in a band before, how did you teach yourself to sing? And what vocalists had the influence on that? When I first heard you sing it kind of sounded like K’s Choice and Guano Apes…

I was in a few bands as a teenager but nothing serious. It was quite difficult in the beginning. I kept losing my voice after rehearsals: S I got a few CD's and some advice on technique. It's all been down to trial & error and playing lots of gigs. PJ Harvey is a big influence, The Distillers, Peter Dolving and Layne Staley. Also my friend Kit from Mallory Knox.

Adrian, Cradle of Filth is of course a something totally different then Nemhain, what do you like about Nemhain the most?

It’s completely different, with Nemhain is punky bluesy rock n roll, the kind of music I grew up with and learned to play drums to. Nemhain’s music has a very raw primal energy and with a lot of song structures it creates a plenty of room to fill on the drums. Less is definitely more when it comes to Nemhain compared to COF.

What do you prefer more? Recording a song, or recording a video?

Amber: Definitely recording songs, it's really rewarding when it goes well. Video's can be a bit stressful and you always feel a bit of a twat miming along. Kind of like being a 10 years old girl shouting into your hairbrush!

Adrian: I like both. Recording is more about capturing the best performance, vibe and sound meanwhile making a video looks cool.

Three of you come from England, what do you think is the best British Comedy? And what do the other members think of British comedy?

Amber: We're all born in the UK apart from Adrian. Fawlty Towers is a big favorite (They aired it in Sweden too, so Adrian loves it) Peepshow's great and Monty Python.

When will you guys get back on the tour?

Adrian: We have a six date German tour with Black Sonic and Die so fluid coming up in February. These will be our first shows for the album. Meanwhile we are working closely with our label and booking agent to arrange to some more shows through out the spring and summer.

If you had the chance to set up your own tour, which band would you choose to go on tour with?

Amber: We would love to go on tour with Monster Magnet or Motörhead.

Lakis, Sam and Lisa, how is it for the three of you to tour and perform with a famous model and the drummer of a famous metal act?

Lisa: It's really horrible; mainly because of Adrian's chronic flatulence. Touring with a world famous top muddle isn't so bad though: D

Lakis: I've never known Amber in a model capacity, only as the singer of the band I'm in, and as a new friend, but yes, she models the mic. well whilst showing it who's boss, and it's great when we jam on new riffs etc! As for Adrian, some of his previous work inspired me when I was a kid, but what's important is that the whole line-up is strong, and that's what the five of us finally have with each other. Bands can go on forever without finding a line-up like this, so I'm happy to work with all of them, apart from Lisa, Sam, Adrian and Amber of course!

Sam: You mean they're famous already? I had no idea, I thought they were making it up, hahaha.

Amber, if you could record a song together with another vocalist, who would that be then?

That's a difficult one, there are quite a few… A toss up between Lemmy, Dave Wyndorf, Pj Harvey, Nick Cave, Pete Steele or Brody Dalle I think.

What can we expect from Nemhain in the future?

Adrian: We are doing lots of interviews at the moment for the album which is very cool so look out for a lot of printed nonsense from us. We are doing the RockInvasion tour with Black Sonic and Die So Fluid which will start Feb20th in Munich. There are some really exciting touring plans for the spring as well. Meanwhile we are already writing songs for our second Nemhain album.
