Helstar

Finally, the first new studio album from Helstar in over 13 years! US power metal at its best! Travel back in time to cult albums like Nosferatu, A Distant Thunder, Remnants Of War and Burning Star. It’s one big blast with this new release, recorded by the classic Remnants Of War line-up. Although the ‘best of cd’ Sins Of The Past from 2007 isn’t too bad, the production is unfortunately as oldschool as the re-recorded songs, The King Of Hell is well produced this time. Very dark and thick, with a lot of attention paid to the drums and guitars.
After a very sinister intro, all hell breaks loose, excellent! The King Of Hell and The Plague Called Man are instantly two strong openers with even some thrash influences. The whole album is a lot heavier than we’re used to from these Texans, and that’s a cool thing! Many well-balanced songs with unexpected hooks and tempo’s. These guys obvioously are well-skilled musicians. The vocals of James Rivera is still at top level, which is the most recognizable for Helstar. Especially on In My Darkness he proves his absolute greatness.
During the entire album it’s old fashioned head banging time. Real highlights aren’t there, since all songs are great, thus a real consistent album! Fifty minutes of tight double bass parts, heavy guitar riffs, screaming vocals, great technical solos, old school lyrics and a cool album cover! What do you need more? An obligatory acquisition! What a comeback!
